Search for SEC Small Business Advocate Starts Soon

Acting SEC Chairman Michael Piwowar’s opening remarks before the SEC Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies on February 15th included guidance that the search for the SEC Small Business Advocate will start soon.

In his first public speech as the agency’s interim leader, Piwowar said the commission will begin its search for a head for the Office of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation “in the near future.” The new position was created by the SEC Small Business Advocate Act.

The law requires that the new advocate be someone who is not a current SEC employee, so I hope you will encourage good candidates you may know to apply,” Piwowar said at a meeting of the SEC Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies.

On December 16th, President Barack Obama signed into law the SEC Small Business Advocate Act of 2016 or HR 3784. The Act creates a new office within the SEC for an individual (the SEC Small Business Advocate) tasked with protecting and promoting the interests of small business and establishes the Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee.
